Abstract

Carol Ann Tomlinson, a teacher for more than twenty years in various school cycles in the state of Virginia and at the University of the same name, where she has carried out intensive research, is internationally recognised as the originator of teaching differentiation. The author argues that teaching differentiation is not a strategy or methodology, but a way of looking at teaching "that exhorts from where learners are, rather than with a predefined plan of action that ignores their differences, challenging teachers' views of assessment, learning, roles in the classroom, use of time and planning.
