Abstract

This article refers to two empirical studies carried out in a small primary school that runs a Cooperative School Association (ACS) in which children engage in educational experiences in and with the community. The research data highlight the circular nature of learning processes that take place through reflective reworking of experiences outside the school environment in the classroom. In addition, significant collaborative relationships between the school and the community are strengthened, outlining an open learning system. The theoretical frame of reference of both research studies is rooted in the community- and placebased education, both of which are oriented towards fostering community experiences and redefining the relationships between internal and external school spaces in an innovative key. Finally, this paper discusses the pedagogical relevance of this ACS.
